Intellectual Property Protection

Study Quest will trademark its name and logo (the book-and-lock icon from your prototype testing) through IP Australia. It will apply for a registered design over the distinctive shape of the lock box, and investigate a
provisional patent over the specific locking mechanism — a compartment that only releases once a set study timer has elapsed and a task has been marked complete in the app. App code, the virtual assistant’s character
design, and marketing content are protected by copyright.

Legal Considerations & Insurance

As an electronic product, Study Quest must comply with Australia’s Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) and carry the Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) before sale, plus general obligations under the Australian Consumer Law (product safety, warranty, refund rights). Because the parent dashboard collects data about a minor’s study habits, Study Quest also complies with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles — tracking study sessions, not phone or browsing content, and requiring clear parental
consent.

Study Quest will hold:

• Product liability insurance — covering the risk of a device malfunctioning or failing to unlock (the top concern raised in your teenager interviews)

• Public liability insurance — for school demonstrations and market stalls

• Business insurance — covering stock and equipment

SUSTAINABILITY

Study Quest is designed to be repaired, not replaced — a removable battery, modular screen and lock motor
mean a broken part doesn’t mean a new box. Casing uses recycled ABS plastic, packaging avoids single-use
plastic, and a trade-in/recycling pathway will be offered at end of life to reduce e-waste.

Political/Legal

Since December 2025, Australia’s Online Safety Amendment (Social Media
Minimum Age) Act 2024 has required platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat to remove under-16 account holders — the clearest sign yet that government sees youth phone habits as a problem worth regulating. South Australia and several other states already restrict phone use in public schools
during the day. This is a supportive climate for Study Quest — but the law only covers social media, not messaging or gaming, which is exactly the gap Study Quest fills during study time.

Economic

Cost-of-living pressure makes parents price-sensitive, so Study Quest will offer a Buy
Now, Pay Later option (e.g. Afterpay/Zip) alongside a single upfront price, and validate demand
through pre-orders before committing to a full manufacturing run.

Environmental

Durable, repairable design and recycled materials limit e-waste from a fast-growing
category of personal tech devices (see Sustainability above).

Social

Rising public conversation about "doomscrolling," phone addiction and teen mental health
(echoed by every parent interviewed) means a visible focus tool is increasingly seen as smart self-
improvement, not embarrassing — something Study Quest’s marketing can lean into.

Technological

The virtual assistant and streak system borrow a gamification model already proven at
scale by apps like Duolingo — applying a familiar, trusted pattern to a new problem rather than
inventing user behaviour from scratch.
